Why Does My Husband Want a Chastity Cage?

Your husband may want a chastity cage because he finds sexual anticipation exciting, wants you to take an agreed lead during private time, or is curious about a fantasy of giving up control. The device itself may appeal to him, or he may imagine it as a private bond between you. The request alone doesn't show that he's dissatisfied with you. Ask, “What do you imagine enjoying about this?”

What might he get out of it?

You might feel curious, unsettled, or hurt that you didn't know about this interest. You don't have to settle those feelings before asking him about it. These possible motives can help you start; more than one may fit.

What might appeal to him What he may mean
Waiting or trying something new He may enjoy having something to look forward to or want a change from a familiar routine.
Letting you lead He may want to stop making the decisions during private time and let you choose.
Feeling close during the day He may imagine a shared secret or a reminder that you're thinking of him.
Curiosity about the cage He may be drawn to its appearance or an associated fantasy without wanting a wider change in your relationship.

What research can tell you

For this article, we reviewed a study published online in 2023 that analyzed responses from 810 adult BDSM participants across 43 countries, mainly the US, Canada, and UK. Enjoyment was the most frequently identified motive for BDSM participation. This was a self-selected sample discussing broader kink interests, not specifically husbands requesting cages. We could not use it to rank the reasons your husband might want one. [1]

Why does he want you involved?

Ask whether he wants to share the fantasy, try it with you, or simply tell you about an interest. If he wants you to hold the key, ask what he expects you to decide and how often.

For example, imagine he says, “I'd like to feel that you're in charge,” while you're picturing messages arriving during your workday. You could ask, “Would this be something we share occasionally, or would you expect me to manage it every day?” You might enjoy being trusted while finding the daily responsibility unwelcome.

Does he feel something is missing?

If the request leaves you wondering whether you're enough, you could say:

“I'm worried you don't enjoy what we have anymore. What would you want to keep, and what would you like to change?”

He can be curious about something new and have an unmet wish at the same time. If he says he misses feeling wanted, ask when he feels that most. Tell him what matters to you, too, such as affectionate touch that doesn't come with a task or a role.

Why is he bringing it up now?

Ask, “When did you first become interested?” and “What made you decide to tell me?” He may have discovered the idea recently or waited to mention an older interest. If the delay hurts, you can say, “I'm glad you told me, but I need time to take this in.” The date he told you doesn't establish when it began.

Does he expect it to keep him faithful?

If he gives this as his reason, ask what he expects the cage to prevent and whether anything has happened to damage trust. Holding a key doesn't transfer responsibility for his choices to you or resolve an existing breach of trust.

Can you understand his reason without agreeing?

Yes. You can say, “I want to understand what you like about it, but I haven't agreed to take part.” Either of you can change your mind after agreeing.

He can be disappointed and still accept your answer. The World Health Organization's description of sexual health includes respectful relationships and freedom from coercion. [2] Wearing someone down with repeated requests for sex or using guilt to obtain unwanted sexual activity are examples of sexual coercion described by the U.S. Office on Women's Health. [3]
